The Professional Stylist’s Guide to Dressing for Fashion Week

I vividly recall my first New York Fashion Week. Although I had only been in New York for a few weeks, I worked as an assistant fashion editor at a magazine and received a ticket to one of the shows. After work, I raced home, grabbed my bag, and searched my small clothing collection for a look that would impress Anna Wintour. I was disappointed. My New York Fashion Week outfit consisted of a striped tank, velvet skirt, and worn black boots. I inherited these budget pieces from a recent college graduate who could have been better. After six fashion weeks and three years, I finally knew what I should wear to fashion week.

Fashion week shouldn’t be stressful. But it should be enjoyable. As a professional stylist, fashion editor, and runway show host, I constantly run between designer presentations, mornings, dinners, and after-parties. Although it sounds glamorous, I’m not trying to make it sound like anything; a week of events demands comfort, versatility, and a statement-making style. (I made the terrible mistake of trying to wear heels and uncomfortable clothing my first season #fashion. I quickly learned and wore jeans and sneakers the next day.

Layers, bold colors, and statement pieces are my favorite. They do the job and can make you stand out in a crowd of designer duds (if your goal is to be snapped by street stylists, which, honestly, who isn’t?). Get together with friends and get a great Insta shot.

Below are 17 photos that will inspire you when dressing up for NYFW. Remember to have fun with your outfits and not overthink them. This is your chance to find those unique pieces buried in your closet. I will wear as many vintage dresses and fanny packs as possible. I cannot wait to get my hands on the new addition to my wardrobe: sequined, ass-less chaps. I will be wearing them with jeans. Cheers!
